ALAN JOHNSON

“Alan Johnston’s work is, at times, almost invisible – but almost is not invisible at all. At a time when our lives are saturated by commodified images, looking at a simple drawing that relies so much on what we, as viewers bring to it, becomes a test not just of our perception but of our whole system of value. What we see how we see it and even whether we register it all are consciously determined – a mirror of our private self in a way – and a measure of our understanding of order, space and ...

GERARD HEMSWORTH

Professor of Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, Gerard Hemsworth’s artistic practice has involved a range of media, from conceptual art to painting and printmaking.

He states that “in order for contemporary art to avoid losing its criticality and being consumed and assimilated, it must undermine and question the rules of engagement and the way they are positioned within our culture. Consequently, in order to transcend art's orthodoxy, the artist needs to find ways to destabilise ...

What is Art?

I really like this question. My answer to this always pisses people off.

I used to say that art is anything created by an artist. An artist is anyone who wants to be an artist. One person I was in a band with used to scream and shout whenever I brought the subject up. People seem to think that an artist needs to be awarded the title. I think it's hard enough getting people to see your artwork so why should aquiring a simple title have to be an upward struggle as well. It doesn't matter ...

Sabhan Adam and an Art Dealer

I was away over Christmas visiting family and I came across this painter that I found inspiring. Check out his webpage. He is a bit of an outsider artist with no formal education. He used to be a poet and then taught himself how to paint. Check out his work from collection number 4.

www.sabhanadam.com

I went to an art dealer and saw him at work. Some rich people were trying to buy paintings to put in their chelsea appartment. The language of buying and selling art was fascinating. ...
